Most people want to know their IP address so that they can host their own website at home. But if your ISP is providing dynamic IP address service, then this address will not stay the same. Even if you do have a static IP address, IP addresses are ugly, and they are still subject to change if you change ISPs or your ISP changes its policies.
The solution is to use a dynamic DNS service so that your home server can have a name instead of an IP address. For more information, see the article how do I get a hostname for my home computer?
