WWW FAQs: What is the World Wide Web?

2003-06-30: The term "World Wide Web" refers to all of the publicly accessible websites in the world, in addition to other information sources that web browsers can access. These other sources include FTP sites (an older way of transferring files), UseNet newsgroups (once the most popular way to post messages to public forums on the Internet), and a few surviving Gopher sites.
